About the Artist

Judith Hoch, Artist & Anthropologist

For part of the year, I live with my husband off the grid, in the "back of beyond" in New Zealand, and for the other part, I live in Florida. A Website is a great way for me to share my art with people, near and far, especially when I'm in Middle Earth.

Long ago, we built a hand-made house on our New Zealand land completely powered by solar panels and a Pelton wheel, Judith Hoch, Artist & Anthropologistwhich turns our rushing forest creek into electricity. Even two decades ago, many thought it was time to stop relying on fossil fuels! For many years, we have been replanting native forest, which is now thriving over forty acres of land. My continuing sources of renewal are living, working, and playing in nature, whether walking, kayaking, or swimming, and indoor practices of divination, altar building, and yoga. I am lucky to live in a county in New Zealand where God is nature, and everyone loves the out of doors. We'd all be happier if we could spend two hours alone in a wild place everyday.

“Jùjú has been my nickname since birth, and I often sign my paintings with this name. It is a coincidence that I’ve carried out anthropological fieldwork in Nigeria where Jùjú is a name for West African popular music and magical charms. I aim to give all my paintings (and my life) a large injection of Jùjú.”
